Today, this view would be of the 2009 LAPD Headquarters taking up the entire block on the left and on the right, the 1935 Los Angeles Times Building, and behind it, the 1948 Crawford Mirror Addition building. The Poundcake Hill buildings originally backed up to Broadway to their west, and faced New High Street to their east. New High Street (see Sanborn map above) was a north-south street that ran parallel to Broadway, and to Spring Street to its east. As part of the construction of City Hall in the early 1920s, New High Street was removed south of Temple, and Spring Street was realigned more towards a north-south orientation, parallel with Broadway, instead of running more northeasterly and meeting Main Street at Temple Street. As a result the Poundcake Hill buildings faced the newly aligned Spring Street until they were demolished. Those interested in knocking on Grey House's door should know that it's much more of a psychological thriller than a classic horror tale.

Written by Levi Holloway, the play follows a couple (Maslany and Paul Sparks) who crash their car in the mountains and seek shelter in a cabin. While there, they witness strange behavior from the inhabitants of the cabin, who include Metcalf, Caruso and a band of young kids, as well as odd noises and actions from the house itself. Joe Mantello directed Coyne in HOT L Baltimore (Suzy) at the Williamstown Theatre Festival. The two-time Tony winner's relationship with the kids often vacillates between hilarious and heartbreaking, and it's her simple scenes with Simmonds and Caruso that are far and away the most poignant moments of the show. The play, which stars Laurie Metcalf, Tatiana Maslany and Sophia Anne Caruso and features direction by Joe Mantello, began preview performances at the Lyceum Theatre on April 29 and opened on June 6. While the concept of horror is not often seen on Broadway, the production was not able to translate that to ticket sales and saw a soft box office throughout its run. A limited number of $35 general rush tickets are available in-person at the box office on the day of the performance, on a first come, first served basis.
There have been giant apes, operatic phantoms, and a misguided vampire or two without providing so much as a single genuine tingle. Without spoiling any of the mystery, Grey House is a play that leaves viewers with more questions than answers. Plot elements that seem to make sense in the moment don't line up upon later reflection, or they lead to follow-up questions that unfortunately can't be resolved in a single viewing.

The building has operated as an office building for most of its history.
